Oriel Dining Hall

2020

Oriel College, Oxford University

The refurbishment of the C17th College Dining Hall was an opportunity to restore the heritage structure and upgrade its services to provide a flexible high-performance environment to meet the College’s expanding needs. Exposure of the timber floor structure revealed a patchwork of primary beams and joists with iterative alterations made over its 400-year history. Laser dendrology scanning allowed targeted repairs to be carried out to the historic primary beams retaining these with only minimal patching in of new oak joists. Underfloor heating was installed beneath the existing oak boards – surveyed, lifted and reinstated in their exact positions. A new decorative scheme to the joinery frieze enhances the richly carved detail and reflects the visual significance of heraldic device within the hall setting.
